Grace is like water flowing over jagged stones whose edges represent our inclination towards evil (the absence of a good that should be there). Over time, the jagged edges disappear and our hearts become smooth and polished to perfection.

Grace is also like good windshield wipers, running fast and smooth in the middle of a raging storm. Without these, we’re more likely to hit something and sustain some kind of damage, if not die. You may get by at a slower speed, and if you run into something, you may not lose your way; you’ll eventually reach your destination, but such progress wouldn’t compare to having the fullness of His grace.

And yet, we have to be careful… the road is slick as the world if full of temptations and the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, waiting to devour someone, unsuspecting.

Grace imparts to us knowledge of spiritual things in addition to serenity that transcends understanding.  We have to cooperate with the grace that is available to us, transversing the way that became open when “the Word became flesh.”

Mary was immaculately conceived. She is “full of grace.” She was born with a smooth and polished heart. She is able to see clearly where our human nature is prone to fall. Comparatively, the rest of us were born with jagged windshield wipers, born in a storm that gets worse as relativism and secularism take root.

She cooperated with the divine plan, avoiding sin in the exercise of her free will.

The angels were in suspense as she gave her yes… “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.”

My soul magnifies the Lord
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
Because He has regarded the lowliness of His handmaid;
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed;
Because He who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is His name;
And His mercy is from generation to generation
on those who fear Him.
He has shown might with His arm,
He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and has exalted the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich He has sent away empty.
He has given help to Israel, his servant, mindful of His mercy
Even as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity forever.

Happy Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God!
